How the course works:
DVDs
There are four main tools we use to teach this course. The first is with our DVDs. The DVDs contain "Lectures" and "Lecture Drills." In the Lectures Master Purcell describes what the technique looks like and why you would use it. Master Purcell, along with several of his assistant instructors, show how the techniques would work in the sport aspect or in a self-defense situation. Master Purcell then uses the "Lecture Drills" to show exactly how the technique is practiced. Once you've had an idea of what the technique looks like and why we would use it, you now have a better understanding of the drill you will be practicing. We have some examples from the DVD's if you would like to see them click on that link. The demo lectures you can purchase will not be the quality of the videos you would see from the actual DVD's but this way you at least get an idea of how Master Purcell teaches his classes.

Text Book
Ideally our course will be practiced three days per week. Every day you do your work out, play the DVD for that particular day. So on the first day, put the first DVD in and select Week 1 Day 1. Sit back and enjoy the show. After you have finished watching that days video, take out your text book and look at Week 1 Day 1. There will be a work out set out for each particular day. There will be a set amount of drills to do and a specific amount of time to practice each of those techniques. The moderator of the class (most likely mom or dad) will keep track of the time spent on each drill. If the moderator wants to do the techniques with the student this is fine (and even encouraged). The moderator just needs to make sure the student does the drills for the specific amount of time listed. The moderator also needs to keep notes from the moderator’s page. (We will get to this part soon)

The text book gives a step by step explanation with full color pictures beside every description (See the demo pages). So every step of the way we have pictures with the written explanation showing exactly how to do the drills. Our editor read the text book and had not watched any of the DVDs or taken any of Master Purcell’s martial arts classes but she completely understood everything that was being conveyed just from reading the text book. Ideally the student sees that they are to work on a particular technique for a specific amount of time, so they begin doing the drill. They have seen "Lectures" on the technique, and they have seen "Lecture Drills" on the technique. However if they still forget how to do the drill, this is why we have the text book. After the student remembers what to do they can start practicing the drill. The moderator will then turn to the next page entiteled "Moderator's Page." This is where the parents will be able to help the students improve their techniques. On the Moderator's page, we have a number of things the moderator can watch to try and help the overall technique of the student. Each day the student will work on one thing from the moderator's page. Sometimes the students will get it on the very first try, so in the instance you would then move to the next thing to improve on from the moderator's page. Other times the student may take a month to get just this one subtle thing. Time isn't the issue, learning is. If it takes them a month to just improve one small thing in their technique then fantastic! Now move to the next one. Again we have several demo pages so you can see what the text book looks like. We also have many places for the moderators to keep notes so they and the students can see their improvement.

Kicking Paddle
The third tool we use is a kicking paddle. A kicking paddle isn’t just used for kicking; it’s just called a kicking paddle. We include the kicking paddle in our package. A kicking paddle is a fun and safe way for the students to work on their accuracy, hand-to-eye coordination, and timing. Kicks, hand strikes, and blocks are all things we can work on by using this paddle.

Online Services and Tests
Moderator Grading (15% of total grade)

For junior high and high school students we recomend you do this course over a 12 week program. This 12 week program conforms to every state's physical education requirements. Some states don't have very strict requirements while other states have a specific amount of time the student needs to spend every week in order to get state certification. That is why we recomend junior high and high school students doing the course over a 12 week period. For younger students, you can span the course out over a longer period of time. All our quizzes and tests are given online. We have pictures that show up on the quiz and the students will have to identify which technique Master Purcell is performing. We also use multiple choice and true/false questions. At the end of each week we have a quiz. At the end of week 6 we have a midterm, and at the end of the trimester we have our final exam. Each quiz or test can be taken up to three times. Each time they take a quiz or test the questions can change. If a student takes the quiz three times it means they had three more opportunities to learn. At the end of each quiz the student is given their score and then asked if they want to keep that score or retake the test. If they take the test three times our program automatically records their best score. The quizzes, midterm, and final constitute 85% of their grade. The other 15% comes from the moderator. It doesn’t matter if the students can kick two feet above their head in order to get a good grade. What matters is that the students try their best and improves over the 12 week period. As long as the student puts forth the effort they will increase the height of their kicks and power of their strikes. That is unless they already begin to kick two feet above their head level and can’t kick any higher then that. However that’s probably something most students won’t have to worry about.

So again in recap, 85% of the grades will be taken on-line. 15% of the grade will be given by the moderator and inputed on line. You will then be given the student's total grade at the end of the program. If you have more then one student wanting to do the class, we have a very large discount to have other family members or students do the classes together. You can hear more about that by looking at the " Order Now page."

Demos:
When viewing these demo videos, know that the quality in our actual DVD's is much better. Because of download speeds, the demos will be small and possibly a little fuzzy. The DVD's are professional quality. We have laid out several demos from the "Lectures" and the "Lecture Drills." In the "Lecture" with the knife hand I talk about the basics of how and where a knife hand would be used. There are actually many different ways it can be used but this is the main way we want to focus on in the first trimester. We also have some demo pages from our text book. One of the demos of our text book has a layout of that days work out at the front of it. It shows what techniques you will be practicing, how long you would practice them, and what pages the techniques would be on. After the lesson plan it has some of the techniques you will be practicing and then the "Moderator's Page" will follow that.
