Homeschool Martial Arts PE

Classes taught from a secular or Christian perspective.
Many different martial arts classes will teach their programs with an eastern spiritual background. We do not do this in our program. Our classes are taught from either a secular or Christian perspective. One lecture per week we briefly talk about life lessons. These are things the martial arts teaches, that carry over to every day life. Respect is a very important part of the martial arts and respect is also a very important part of every day living. We are also going to be talking about self-control, perseverance, discipline, integrity, confidence, and courtesy. These are all things that the martial arts teach but we want to show how they apply in Tae Kwon Do and in our lives at home and with friends.

Christian Perspective
If you want the class taught from a Christian perspective we have an extra DVD that is included with the course. If you want this extra DVD just ask for it, it’s free. To be a professor at Seattle Pacific University you have to be a Christian. The lectures Master Purcell gives in all his martial art PE programs are the same lectures he gives in the extra DVD. The Bible talks about our bodies being a temple of the Lord. Notice the passage says, “Temple” and not church. There is a distinction between a church and a temple. A church can be any building where people meet to learn about and worship God. A temple is a sanctuary. Our bodies are temples of the Lord not churches.

Many people believe that Jesus was a pacifist and that any violence or use of force is wrong. I don’t believe this is the case. I think God does want us to be able to defend ourselves. And on several occasions Jesus did use force to get across his point. We are going to get into passages dealing with eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth and other passages telling us to turn the other cheek.

The bottom line is God does want us to live happy and prosperous lives. There are things we need to explore when it comes to taking care of our bodies and learning self-defense from a Christian point of view. The lectures Master Purcell gives are easy to understand but in-depth enough to start making the students look deeper into their faith.
